Plant Engineers Council: Energy Event—Microgrids Demystified

Energy Event—Microgrids Demystified

While natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy bring focus to the susceptibility or resiliency of our electrical system to catastrophic events, business owners know too well the implications of diminished power quality and momentary interruptions that they face on a daily basis. New York State has put forth a large number of initiatives seeking to modernize our energy infrastructure from a technical and regulatory perspective from Reforming the Energy Vision and Clean Energy Standard, to NY Prize and the Energy Highway.

OBG will provide a technical presentation on one of these components, microgrids, and discuss the emerging technologies and promise these platforms can offer to businesses seeking to ensure business continuity in their operations. To date, a great deal of focus has been offered towards developing community wide resiliency, which often is hard to quantify in terms of dollars and cents. Unlike communities, businesses can offer a far more definitive cost estimate for the loss of energy service and lack of power quality in their operational model, making cost justification or ROI for microgrids easier to justify.
