Kilian Manufacturing Hosts P-TECH Freshmen Students

P-TECH 9th-grade students visited Kilian Manufacturing on Friday, February 9th. They first had a PowerPoint presentation that gave a brief history of the company, which is almost 100 years old.  General Manager Don Wierbinski noted that Kilian is the largest producer of bearings in the world.  Their bearings are used in a wide variety of industries – aerospace, transportation, automotive, agriculture, material handling, meat processing, and more.  Their engineering department can custom-design a product to meet application requirements.

The company employs many different types of careers – design, manufacturing, sales, quality, purchasing, accounting, I.T., and maintenance.  Students were divided into small groups with each having a Kilian employee as their tour guide.  They viewed many different areas on the production floor and observed the three compressors that power the machines.  Of special interest to the students was a hands-on project that allowed them to each create their own bearing using a simple technique.  While it took a few minutes to produce their bearing, they learned that employees in that department make about 400 bearings per hour!

Thanks to Don, H.R. Manager Keith Flynn, our tour guide Bob McCarthy, and several other Kilian staff for making this visit both educational and fun.
