Are You Learning Alone?
By: David Freund, Chief Leadership Officer

John Maxwell’s Law of the Lid states that our teams and our organizations cannot grow beyond our level of knowledge and expertise. I have had a front row seat in watching this law proved out many times. The sad reality is that often I was the one holding my team and my organization back. This morning I was thinking about learning and how it is so connected to last week’s topic of partners. Having partners as we learn makes it more fun and dramatically improves the entire experience. Let’s take a look at just one example.

The MastermindThe sum of two minds thinking together on the same topic is greater than their individual parts. They are together a mastermind.

The power in the mastermind is found in the participants. Each participant is expected to come prepared to be part of the learning process. If the mastermind is centered around a specific book, each participant reads the book and then comes prepared to share his or her thoughts on the reading. I have had the privilege of leading our 21 Laws of Leadership Mastermind for the last two years. I am always amazed at what people find in the laws. Since we are all experiencing different things in our lives, the applications of the Laws vary, and we see different nuances in each of the Laws. When we share with each other, everyone learns more.

Masterminds are also used for sharpening our thinking. Successful leaders know the power of ideas is found in sharing and exploring their thoughts and ideas with others. Typically, these groups are six to ten individuals who come together on a regular basis to speak into each other’s thoughts.  They question and challenge each other as the ideas are perfected. Author Napoleon Hill put it best when he said: “No two minds ever came together without thereby creating a third, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to the mastermind.”
