Thoughts, Feelings, and Actions

By: David Freund, Chief Leadership Officer

Back in June, I wrote a post that was titled, But it was just a thought…or so I thought. In the post, I shared that I had been going through a very challenging time. If you were to ask my family back then, they would have said that I was miserable to be around. I had blamed my attitude on the prednisone I was taking for swollen vocal cords. After I had finished the prednisone, I would have these moments where I felt miserable and down. For the better part of a week, I had been thinking and praying about this issue when I stumbled on this quote: “There is no such thing as a thought that doesn’t have consequences.” I was thinking myself into a miserable mindset.

I recently interviewed author and certified Life Coach, Lisa Cavallaro, for The Next Page podcast regarding the Law of Attraction. During our conversation, Lisa shared with me these three words: thoughts, feelings, and actions. Our thoughts, result in our feelings, which result in our actions. According to Lisa, we can change everything by changing our thoughts.

In our conversation, Lisa said, “We like to be right, but sometimes being right might not make us feel good.” A situation might be true, but dwelling on that truth might actually make us feel bad. Since we know that we can’t change others, why not work on changing our mindset on the matter. Now I realize that all of this sounds easy, but believe me I know that it’s really tough. It takes a conscious effort to know what we are thinking and why.

Over the last two months, I have been taking the time to reflect each morning on how I am feeling in the moment. This allows me to find patterns in my moods or feelings. I can then look back into the previous day and try to determine why I might be feeling that way. Then, I make a plan to improve my thoughts in the area that has me stressed.  The key for us is to own the feeling, and process through why we are feeling it. The temptation is to ignore it, but trust me, it doesn’t help to ignore it. It only gets worse.
