Ready, Set, Grow! – Part 2
By: David Freund, Chief Leadership Officer
As we start the second week of our growth series, I wanted to share three more Laws of Growth with you: The Law of Reflection, The Law of Consistency, and The Law of Environment. Remember that you need to really live these laws if you want to grow. You can’t just bolt them onto your life.
The Law of Reflection. You have heard me say on many occasions, “reflection turns experience into insight.” This occurs because reflection is a purposeful pause that allows us the time to investigate what has happened during the day. It also gives our thoughts and ideas a time of incubation. If we rush through these ideas, we will miss the opportunity to improve them. If we rush through a difficult situation, we miss what we can learn and will be more likely to repeat the mistakes that brought on the situation.
The Law of Consistency. Motivation gets you going; consistency keeps you growing. You might think that’s just a cute little phrase that I like to throw around, but it is a basic truth. When we create success habits, we make success a habit. The simple act of doing the correct things over and over makes our success inevitable. When I was learning to play an instrument, my teachers always made me practice scales. Oh, how I hated practicing those scales. What they never told me was all the songs I would learn to play are constructed with the chord progressions made up of notes in those scales and once I memorize the fingerings for those scales, the songs would be very easy to learn.
The Law of Environment. If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room. Who will you be able to learn from if everyone comes to you for the answers? It has been said that we become the average of the five people we hang with the most. Who are you hanging with? Are you in a growth environment? A great way to know if you are in a growth environment is to discern whether you are looking forward to what you are doing or looking back to what you have done. Remember that growth thrives in a conducive environment. Create that growth environment.
